Morality & Chastity Curriculum

Faith and Morals

  1. Students will learn God is a mystery. In God there are three divine persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who have loved each other forever. (CCC 253)
  2. Students will learn since we are created in God's image, we are called to love each other as the persons of the Holy Trinity love each other.
  3. Students will learn human life is sacred because of our origins and destiny and must be respected from conception until natural death. (CCC 2270; 2276 ff)
  4. Students will learn we are all children of the same heavenly Father in Christ. We are also all meant to be brothers and sisters of one another in Him.
  5. Students will learn there are different kinds of love: God's love for us, the love between husbands and wives, parents' love for their children and the love between friends.
  6. Students will learn that at Baptism, the Holy Spirit came into our hearts in a special way. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and we must treat them with respect. (CCC 1213 ff)
  7. Students will learn that the joyful mysteries of the Rosary help us to learn what Scripture says about Jesus' life before He was born and as a little boy with Mary and Joseph.
  8. Students will learn God asked Mary to be the mother of Jesus, and she accepted. Jesus grew in Mary's womb for nine months before He was born in Bethlehem.
  9. Students will learn Jesus, Mary and Joseph are called the Holy Family.
  10. Students will learn when a husband and wife have children they become parents.
  11. Students will learn children are the greatest gifts that God can give to a husband and a wife. (CCC 1652)
  12. Students will learn God gave us mothers and fathers, biological or adoptive, to love us and take care of us, body and soul, and to help us become the loving persons God wants us to be.
  13. Students will learn children show their love for their parents and God by obeying them, helping around the house, being honest, considerate and cheerful.
  14. Students will learn that when Jesus was a little boy, He obeyed Mary and Joseph. We should ask God to give us the grace to obey our parents every day, even when we find it hard.
  15. Students will learn when we love our parents, brothers, sisters, and friends, we are better able to love God. We should ask God every day for the grace to become a loving person.
  16. Students will learn everyone has a vocation from God to become a loving person whether in marriage and family life, the priesthood, religious life or single life.
  17. Students will learn God calls some people such as priests, religious and some single people, to devote themselves to taking care of God's family, the Church.
  18. Students will learn the difference between temptation and sin.
  19. Students will discuss the importance of receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion in overcoming temptation and the cultivation of the virtues. (CCC 1422 ff; 1322 ff) Students will be encouraged to receive these Sacraments regularly.
  20. Students will learn about examples from the lives of Jesus, Mary and the saints related to family life.
  21. Students will increase their ability to examine their consciences daily in the light of their awareness of right and wrong, and how to grow toward a correct conscience that is neither lax nor scrupulous.
  22. Students will continue to have opportunities to prepare themselves for a worthy and fruitful reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Communion.

Personal, Health, and Safety

  1. Students will recognize the special qualities of the human person.
  2. Students will recognize all human beings grow and develop in a given sequence but that rates and patterns vary with each individual.
  3. Students will learn our bodies are gifts from God and we must take care of them by eating the right kinds of food, getting enough rest and exercise, and trying to protect ourselves from sickness.
  4. Students will learn we can show our love for others in many ways. One of the reasons that God gave us our bodies is to help us show our love and affection for other persons. We do this through hugging, holding hands, patting each other on the back, etc.
  5. Students will learn each of us grew for nine months in our mother's womb before we were born.
  6. Students will develop a sense of moral responsibility for their own actions.
  7. Students will learn about the importance of hygiene and other practices to maintain a healthy body.
  8. Students will learn about communicable diseases and degrees of contagiousness and risk for a variety of diseases (e.g., malaria, measles, flu, common cold, Hepatitis).
  9. Students will recognize the dangers of substance abuse, e.g., alcohol, drugs, inhalants, nicotine, food, etc.
  10. Students will be reinforced in the idea that their goal in life is to do the best they can with the gifts God has given them.
  11. Students will be reinforced in the importance of avoiding bad situations and in ways of avoiding those situations.
  12. Students will be able to name significant adults with whom they can share important information.
  13. Students will learn to tell parents and/or teachers when anyone touches them and says it is a secret and not to tell anyone.*
  14. Students will learn how to say "no" to any risk behaviors or uncomfortable situations.

Character, Family, and Social

  1. Students will be encouraged to investigate their own family's history and traditions.
  2. Students will identify what makes a good friendship and the importance of including others in their group.
  3. Students will learn a good relationship is one in which we truly love the other person, caring about that person and helping him or her to do what is right and good.
  4. Students will distinguish between "liking" and "loving" another person.
  5. Students will discuss traits of a good friend.
  6. Students will identify a concrete way they can demonstrate respect for human life.
  7. Students will learn elements of self-worth, fairness and justice, caring and compassion, social responsibility, personal integrity, pursuit of excellence, and appropriate expression of rights and responsibilities.
  8. Students will learn practical applications of the cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance) and the theological virtues (faith, hope, charity). (CCC 1805, 1813)
